Start a room plan with measurements

Measure the room and mark doors, windows and fixed features on a simple sketch. Note which way doors open and where everyday routes cross the space. Add the dimensions of furniture you already own.

Try arrangements on paper before moving heavy pieces. Keep access routes clear and check whether drawers and cabinet doors can open. An appealing arrangement still needs to work when the room is in use.

Choose one small change to test first. Live with it for a few days and note what improves or becomes awkward. Keep the measurements so future decisions begin with information rather than a guess.
